A seminar on "The Place of Women in Indian History: Past and Present" was held on Sunday, April 3, 1988, at the initiative of the West Bengal History Society, at Dwarbhanga Hall, Calcutta University. Throughout the day, a large number of people who were fond of history, members of the Parliament of History were present - especially the number of women and students was noticeable. After the speeches of various speakers, many of the audience participated in the discussion. This book titled 'Women in Indian History' can be said to be the product of that discussion. The Executive Committee of the West Bengal Itihasa Samsad entrusted the editing of the book to the present editors, and with that eager anticipation the articles of the lectures came into print, which is certainly good news.
